I'm sure you can hot rod a IH engine, but you'll be on the same track as the Rodders back in the day modifying the engines. They had to do everything themselves, at least untill the speed shops started making the speed parts. I guess the reason people chose to put a newer v8 in is the same reason folks put in sb Chevys in their rides.
