I'm not sure why GM ever went to the "disposable" plastic covers. I'm sure it's cost-cutting, but I never understood why they would intentionally mess with a part like a steel timing chain cover which never gave any problems for decades on millions of motors. I can't imagine it saved them more than a buck or two per engine.
