You can keep the 258 displacement if you like though, would be cheaper, and can still easily get 220-250 hp. you will want a bigger carb though.

Even after the 258 was worn out (needed rings and a bore) it was the stronger engine of the two (same transmission tires and gearing). If doing it again I would try to find a good newer 258 (1987+) to inject or build an injected stroker; the 4.0 just doesn’t have much performance stock.
